My Car's Road Tax Has Expired — Can I Still Sell My Car?
You may still be able to sell a Malaysian-registered private car with expired road tax. However, agreeing a sale, completing JPJ ownership transfer and legally driving the vehicle are separate matters.
Start with the vehicle record
Check the registered owner, road-tax expiry and any restriction on ownership transfer. Where finance remains, follow the lender's settlement process and confirm release of its ownership claim. Obtaining a settlement quotation does not itself clear the loan.
Use the correct inspection
The ownership-transfer inspection report is M.V.15, formerly B5. It is not an alternative to renewing insurance and road tax, and renewal does not replace transfer inspection.
A private vehicle with road tax expired for more than three years requires Special Inspection under PUSPAKOM's published guidance. There is no general one-year trigger for transfer inspection. Tell the inspection provider if you need both renewal and transfer so it can confirm the required bookings.
Check the report expiry
The dated PUSPAKOM notice sets M.V.15 validity at 120 days effective 1 July 2026. Use the expiry printed on the issued report when planning the transfer; the old 60-day statement in this article is superseded.
Arrange legal and safe movement
An inspection booking does not authorise driving with expired road tax. Use suitable vehicle transport, or ask JPJ about its Temporary Travel Permit for inspection. Any approved journey must meet the permit's route, date and insurance conditions. If the vehicle may be unsafe, arrange transport rather than driving it.
Agree responsibilities before handover
Prepare the registration document/VOC and the identification and supporting documents required for your ownership type. Confirm who will arrange inspection, transport, lender clearance and transfer, and agree the charges. A general authorisation letter should not be assumed to replace an individual owner's JPJ identity requirements.
Mobee offers eligible Klang Valley sellers a free Mobee inspection and no seller fees. Check vehicle eligibility and the current process first. Transport availability, third-party costs, offers and completion times must be confirmed for the case.
