How to Sell Your Car in Malaysia: 5 Simple Steps
A good price matters. So does avoiding wasted viewings and a last-minute scramble over paperwork. Here’s how to sell your car in Malaysia, from choosing a buyer to handing over the keys.
1. Pick a selling route that suits you
- Private buyer: you handle the advert, the “best price?” messages, viewings and negotiations.
- Dealer or car-selling platform: get an offer and check which paperwork they handle.
- Trade-in: convenient when buying your next car. Ask for both prices separately so you can judge the deal.
2. Get the car ready and compare offers
Clean the car, take clear photos and be upfront about known faults. Gather your identification, geran or Vehicle Ownership Certificate (VOC), service records and loan details.
Use listings for similar models, years and mileages as a starting point. Then compare offers after inspection. The advertised price isn’t necessarily what someone will pay.
3. Work out what you’ll actually receive
If you still have a loan, get the bank’s full-settlement figure. Sell for RM45,000 and use RM32,000 to clear the loan, and you have RM13,000 left before agreed costs. If the offer won’t cover the loan, you’ll need to top up.
Record the buyer’s details, price, deposit, deductions, payment timing and handover terms in writing. If the buyer needs financing, confirm approval before fixing a handover date.
4. Sort out payment and the transfer
Agree who pays the bank, who pays you and when. For a standard private transfer, the bank’s ownership claim must be cleared first.
Selling to another individual? Arrange an ownership-transfer inspection at an appointed centre such as PUSPAKOM, then complete the JPJ transfer after passing. Eligible transactions can use mySIKAP; check any in-person verification requirements.
For a dealer or platform sale, ask how they handle the transfer and when you’ll receive confirmation.
5. Do one last check before handing over

Check payments due at handover in your own bank account. A screenshot from the buyer isn’t enough.
Check the glovebox, take your parking cards and clear saved personal data. Record the date, mileage, keys and documents handed over. Keep the agreement, payment records, loan-settlement evidence and transfer confirmation.
Ask your insurer or agent about cancelling the policy and transferring your no-claim discount (NCD).
