Where to Sell Your Car in Malaysia
You can sell your car in Malaysia to a private buyer, approach a dealer or car-selling service, or trade it in when buying another car. Compare the work involved, the costs and the final offer before choosing.
Compare your car-selling options
| Option | What you gain | What to weigh up |
|---|---|---|
| Private sale | You set the asking price and negotiate directly with buyers. | You handle the advert, enquiries, viewings and sale arrangements. |
| Dealer or selling service | You can seek an offer without running your own advert. | Fees and help with paperwork vary. You still need to compare the final offers. |
| Trade-in | You arrange the sale of your old car alongside buying its replacement. | A higher trade-in offer does not always mean you pay less for your next car. |
Know what help is included
An online advert helps people find your car. You still handle enquiries and the sale unless extra services are included. A dealer or selling service may organise more of the process, so ask who buys the car and who handles payment and ownership transfer.
Compare what ends up in your pocket
Ask for final written offers and check what you will receive after fees or deductions. Make sure each offer covers the same car condition and accessories. If you still owe the bank, allow for the loan settlement too. An initial estimate is only a starting point.
Trading in? Compare how much you need to pay for your next car. A bigger trade-in offer does not always mean a better deal.
| Example | Deal A | Deal B |
|---|---|---|
| Next-car price after discount | RM95,000 | RM97,000 |
| Less: offer for your old car | RM30,000 | RM32,000 |
| Amount left to pay | RM65,000 | RM65,000 |
Both deals leave RM65,000 to pay. Deal B gives you RM2,000 more for your old car but charges RM2,000 more for its replacement. Example excludes fees and any outstanding loan.
Agree when payment is due and when you will hand over the car. If you are buying another one, match the dates so you are not left without transport.
