What’s a Recond Car and How Do I Sell a Recond Car in Malaysia?
In Malaysia, a recond car usually means a used vehicle imported from overseas for local sale. For a seller, the key question is whether it is already registered in Malaysia. That determines which process you need to check.
Already registered in Malaysia
A previously imported car that is now registered locally is being resold as a registered vehicle. Being recond does not by itself exempt a private car from the required ownership-transfer inspection. JPJ requires cars to pass inspection at an appointed centre before transfer; PUSPAKOM's transfer report is M.V.15, formerly B5.
Do not use the car's original import inspection as an assumed substitute for the inspection needed for today's transfer. Confirm the required booking against the current registration, intended transaction and any modifications.
Not yet registered in Malaysia
An unregistered imported car is a first-registration case, not an ordinary transfer from one Malaysian registered owner to another. PUSPAKOM lists new or used imports awaiting JPJ registration under Special Inspection. Ask the importer and JPJ for the applicable approval, Customs and registration documents. Do not apply a universal AP/K1/Form 8/JK69 checklist to every later resale.
Prepare a clear vehicle file
For a registered resale, prepare the VOC, the owner's original identity document, applicable transfer form, inspection report and any finance-release documents. Add service history, spare keys and genuine import or auction records you already hold. Have unexplained identity or record discrepancies checked; foreign-language stickers or equipment alone do not establish the vehicle's history.
Deal with finance and condition honestly
Obtain the lender's current settlement instructions if money is still owed. A settlement quotation does not clear the loan; the finance claim must be released for transfer. Agree how the proceeds and any shortfall will be handled before handover.
Disclose known accident repairs, modifications, mileage issues and missing records. A transfer inspection serves a regulatory purpose and is not a warranty of mechanical condition or a verified mileage history.
Compare offers on the same basis
Confirm the exact variant, condition, maintenance history, included items and payment conditions when comparing offers. Dealer interest and the final price depend on the vehicle; no guide can guarantee the highest offer.
