Selling Your E-Hailing Car in Malaysia: A Step-by-Step Guide
Selling a car used for e-hailing requires more than closing a driver account. The operator's vehicle permit, JPJ usage record, insurance and ownership transfer are separate matters. This guide covers a sale for private use; a buyer continuing e-hailing needs a case-specific process.
1. Check the vehicle and permit records
Confirm the registered owner, current JPJ usage status, all relevant e-hailing operators and permit records, insurance and road-tax position. A PSV licence belongs to the driver; the EVP concerns the vehicle's e-hailing operation. Neither is a completed ownership transfer.
APAD is the land public transport agency for Peninsular Malaysia. Sabah and Sarawak have their respective LPKP authorities. Ask the operator responsible for your permit which cancellation process applies in your region.
2. Request the correct cancellation
Tell the operator that you intend to sell the car for private use and request the applicable EVP cancellation and supporting confirmation. Check all relevant operators if the vehicle has more than one permit record. Do not assume deleting the app, ending a driver account or receiving a cancellation request acknowledgement changes the JPJ record.
3. Confirm the inspection and change-of-use sequence
Private-use conversion can require Special Inspection (B2) and an update at JPJ. Grab's published guidance describes B2 for conversion; its Sabah guidance explicitly says cancelling its EVP alone leaves the vehicle classified as e-hailing. Confirm your current regional checklist and any deadline in the cancellation letter before booking.
Ownership-transfer inspection is a separate requirement. Tell PUSPAKOM that the car is an e-hailing vehicle being converted and sold, so it can confirm the required inspection combination and order with JPJ. Do not assume B2 alone, a routine e-hailing report, or a Mobee valuation inspection replaces M.V.15. JPJ-EH1 declares e-hailing use; do not use it as an assumed cancellation form.
4. Align finance, insurance and transport
Obtain the lender's settlement instructions and confirm release of its ownership claim before transfer. A quotation alone is not clearance. Ask your insurer how to maintain the correct cover during conversion and sale, and have JPJ confirm the vehicle record. Do not drive without the required road-tax, insurance or approved inspection-permit arrangements.
5. Disclose the history and complete the sale
Tell the buyer about previous e-hailing use, mileage, repairs and known defects. Keep the cancellation confirmation, inspection results, updated registration, payment evidence and transfer confirmation together. A completed conversion does not erase commercial-use history.
Mobee Cars Malaysia offers eligible Klang Valley sellers a free Mobee inspection and no seller fees. Confirm acceptance of the vehicle and the support available for your case. Dealer demand, third-party costs and completion time vary.
